4R Group lead environmental clean-up in response to Shoreham Air Crash
On the 22nd August 2015, a Hawker Hunter T7 aircraft devastatingly crashed onto the A27 during an air display at the Shoreham Air Show. Consultants from the 4R Group were called to the scene to assess the potential environmental contamination from the incident and lead a remediation program to restore the impacted area.
4R Group Environmental Consultants surveyed the crash site and took appropriate samples to determine if any contamination, such as aviation fuels, oils and products of combustion from the incident were present. Following assessments the 4R team worked closely with the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, Highways Agency and Sussex Police to design a suitable and efficient clean-up operation for the area, which involved removal of contaminated water, along with contaminated topsoil, followed by replacement of appropriate soil, planting of 140 replacement trees and sowing of grass.
Working at the Shoreham scene was a challenging and emotional time for the 4R Group and we hope our assistance went a little way towards restoring some normality for those living in the area. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of those who tragically lost their lives.
