The Grass Starts to Grow on the Allerton Bywater Colliery Spoil Restoration Site
In late autumn last year the restoration of the bare spoil areas on the Allerton Bywater colliery spoil tip were successfully completed by the Land Restoration team.
We applied over 7,500 tonnes of a range of “waste” materials that neutralised spoil acidity and incorporated organic materials to create “Soil from Spoil” to a depth of half a metre.
On an hours inspection of the site yesterday we saw an abundance of wildlife, including red deer, a marsh harrier, cormorants feeding on the adjacent fishing lake and other small birds such as robins, bullfinches, blue tits and others.
