Bittern Spotted on Spoil Tip Restoration Site
On Saturday whilst walking over a spoil tip near Castleford restored by 4R in 2016 Mike spotted an extremely reclusive Bittern flying low over one of the reed lined ponds on the site. To confirm that it was a Bittern he asked a bird watcher in camouflage stood nearby who excitedly confirmed his suspicion.
This site had areas of bare barren acidic spoil feeding run off water into the ponds, treating those areas has removed this toxic run off, making the ponds more conducive to wildlife using them for feeding and nesting.
